Law
& Literature Paper One |
| In Henry V, we have dealt with oppositions
on a variety of levels. Scene, to scene, character to character, or quality
to quality. Pick two that seem in tension with each other.
For example pick two scenes such as Hal's lonely scene the night before
Agincourt with the scene of pride when decides to battle France.
Or qualities, such as the aggressive relentless language of that threads
through Harfleur and the decision to do war with the refined and accepting
language of Katherine learning English. Or you could pick status
such as the intimacy of friendship as opposed to the distance involved
in leadership. In other words, set up any tension you perceive. |
|
| Using EXTENSIVE quotes, (phrases,
words, passages) from text, explore and juxtapose the tension you have
chosen. Then explain how that that polarity is reconciled or fitted
together within the play. For example, one might speak of the kind
of savage tenderness of Katherine and Hal's dialogue, or the refinement
of the warrior spirit in the agincourt speech, or the broader move of Hal
to finally being a kindly king or gracious king in his scene with Fluellen
at the end of battle. There are many others that involve other characters.
Again use EXTENSIVE quotes. |
|
| Hints: This
should be a five paragraph paper: short intro with thesis, exploration
of one side of polarity, exploration of other side, reconciliation, brief
conclusion. Weave quotes into your sentences. You will be graded on your
form as well as your substance meaning lilt, rhythm, pith, and elegance
of your writing. Come see me if you have questions. Good luck. |
